OVERVIEW
This is a numbers matching 1978 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe (25th
anniversary silver), VIN 1Z87L8S426983 with about 80,000 miles. It was
sold to us after the previous owner had requested an estimate to
completely restore the car and was dismayed by the total. We have done
some of the work to this car, but it needs more. It is a base-motor car
(350) with automatic transmission, four seasons air conditioning, power
steering-brakes-windows, original AM/FM stereo with rear speakers,
cruise master speed control, electro-clear rear defogger, power antenna,
and tilt-telescopic steering wheel. Car has no documentation other than
a copy of the original dealer invoice. We have inspected this car from
top to bottom and although it needs some minor work, this is not a bad
car for the money.
EXTERIOR
The paint is decent up close and even better from a few feet away and
has the usual assortment of chips and scratches. The top (silver) paint
is original lacquer and the bottom (black) has been repainted enamel at
one point in time. The body is straight with the exception of the right
front fender which has been replaced and painted at one point in time
(hardly noticeable). The glass is nice with no cracks that I could see.
The windshield frame is good. Two tires have gone flat, but I can find
some others to get it moved. The car could probably use
weather-stripping in the not too distant future. The underside has some
typical rust and fluid seepage no worse or no better than any of the
other cars we service. Overall, my opinion is that the exterior rates a
7 out of 10.
INTERIOR
The carpet as well as the rest of the interior is original and has
noticeable fading. This is typical for red 70's GM and can be replaced
as needed. The seat covers are pretty good with only one or two small
tears. The dash pad has a tiny crack about 1". The clock, tach, spedo,
and gas gauges do not work. The power windows do not work well either.
The courtesy lamps and a marker are burned out. The steering wheel is
fairly worn out.
MECHANICS
Earlier this year, the car started, idled, drove, steered, shifted, and
stopped smoothly. The transmission seal went bad and no longer holds
fluid. We replaced the steering pump hoses - but the car needs a
steering control valve as well. The frame is solid with no stress cracks
or excessive corrosion. We replace the plugs and the engine performs
well and only hesitates when cold. The suspension is good and does not
have excess play. We replaced the right rear trailing arm and strut rod
as well as the half-shafts/ u-joints. We worked on the brakes including
front pads, rotors, caliper lines, emergency brake work, etc. We worked
the headlights and they go up and down with no problems.
SUMMARY
Understand that we fixed as much as we could on this car for the price
we are asking. We are certainly available to repair some of the things
listed - but you must buy the car first and then pay for the work as
needed. I will not agree to make any repairs prior to delivery. Anyone
is welcome to inspect the vehicle by appointment in the Gaithersburg
Maryland area. I am available for questions from 1pm-9pm Mon-Sat
toll-free at (240) 876-0935.
